OBTAINING A SLEEP APNEA DIAGNOSIS
Sleep apnea is sometimes diagnosed by a doctor after you discuss your symptoms. However, most doctors do prefer that you undergo a sleep study to determine if obstructive sleep apnea is the problem and just how much the problem is interfering with your breathing at night. If you are not quite sure if sleep apnea treatment is right for you, we recommend talking to your doctor and perhaps undergoing a sleep study to determine the severity of your condition. It can be helpful if a proper diagnosis is obtained prior to scheduling an appointment for treatment with Cros Dental. For more information, feel free to contact our office. We’d be happy to answer any of your questions.
ABOUT SLEEP APNEA TREATMENT & ANTI-SNORING DEVICES
At Cros Dental, we offer sleep apnea treatment for patients that are interested in avoiding CPAP machines and surgery. Our sleep apnea treatment focuses on adjusting the mouth and airway, allowing the patient to properly breathe while sleeping throughout the night. This form of treatment is done with what is referred to as an oral appliance.
What is oral appliance therapy or treatment?
Oral appliance therapy involves using a custom-made oral appliance (mouthpiece) while you sleep. The appliance is designed to hold your airway open while you sleep so issues with obstruction do not get in the way of you breathing freely. The mouthpiece slips in your mouth comfortably, and after a brief period of getting used to the unit in the mouth, you will hardly know it is in place.
How is the custom-made oral appliance made?
The dentist will take impressions of the inside of your mouth and utilizes specific measurements to have the appliance created in a dental lab. Once the appliance is made, you will come in to make sure the mouthpiece fits comfortably and does what it is intended to do. The mouthpiece is specifically designed to fit the shape of your bite and align your jaws in a certain way to prevent problems with airflow. If there are issues with comfort or function, the dentist will make adjustments.
Does the oral appliance help you stop snoring?
The oral appliance is actually sometimes referred to as an anti-snoring device because the opening of the airway can help prevent some types of snoring. Even if you do not have sleep apnea but you are concerned about snoring issues, it can be a good idea to talk to the dentist about oral appliance therapy with an anti-snoring device.
